Combining new technology and materials with traditional Chinese building influences, AOE has created a visually impactful structure to house the sales office of a new luxury apartment project in Chongqing.
Architects AOE are looking to engaging new technology, materials and ideas to create a new form of Chinese architecture adapting the modern era with the valuable Chinese culture. They hope to use design to regain the essence of Chinese culture and reshape their cultural self-confidence.
Sunac as one of the largest developers in China will develop a luxury apartment project in Chongqing located on Huxie Road. AOE will design their temporary sales office, which will ultimately be converted into a kindergarten, creating two different functions, with differing requirements for space, form and appearance.
Unlike western architecture, which is based on stone masonry construction system, ancient Chinese architecture does not use geometric forms as the basis of architectural performance. Instead, the Chinese-style wood structure emphasis more about architectural logic following the natural law.
For this project, AOE adopted the strategy of adding an exterior layer of removable green skin, metal mesh, outside the building for sustainable and imagery purpose. This layer of skin creates a unique facade of the sales office which is conveyed by the core concept of Chinese architecture from the artistic conception of the expression. The use of metal fabric as the secondary skin forms a sustainable curtain to protect the building from direct sunlight which saves energy. The internal and external space are linked visually and spatially in an elegant transition with translucent materials visually blurring the spaces.
Structural components such as pillars, beams, brackets, rafters and purlin are exposed, revealing the natural mechanics of the law. The overhangs of the eaves create a zone merging the nature and building into one, to achieve the symbiotic state of man and nature.
