The Victorian architectural landscape is vibrant with creativity and innovation, reflecting a rich tapestry of design that spans across multiple disciplines. The Australian Institute of Architects has announced the shortlist for the 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards, presenting the most outstanding projects from across the state. With 228 submissions across 15 categories, this year's awards showcase the exceptional work that architects are doing to improve Victoria's built environment.
Highlighting Regional Projects
Among the standout projects are significant regional developments that have made a substantial impact on their communities. The Wirrng Wirrng community hub in Queenscliff, designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, demonstrates a thoughtful approach to public architecture. The Galkangu building in central Bendigo by Lyons, shortlisted in both Regional and Commercial Architecture categories, exemplifies a harmonious blend of design and function. Additionally, Powerhouse Place by Public Realm Lab in Mildura, shortlisted in Urban Design, Regional Architecture, and Sustainable Architecture, connects the city's CBD and the Murray River with a focus on sustainability and community integration.
David Wagner FRAIA, Victorian State President and 2024 Chair of Juries, noted, "It's inspiring to see the range of innovative projects coming from our regional areas. These architects are not only designing beautiful spaces but also creating meaningful connections within their communities."
Interior Architecture and Residential Projects
The Interior Architecture category is populated with striking examples of innovative design in residential spaces. The Northcote House by LLDS, with its sleek lines and modern aesthetics, has captured attention, while Kennedy Nolan's Fairlie Apartment showcases a unique approach to urban living. Not to be overlooked, the Geelong Arts Centre (Stage 3) by ARM Architecture is nominated across multiple categories, emphasizing its role as a versatile and dynamic space for public use.
Wagner remarked, "Our Interior Architecture category demonstrates a keen eye for detail and an understanding of how people interact with spaces. The shortlisted projects are designed to enhance the living experience while embracing contemporary design elements."
A Strong Focus on Sustainability
Sustainability plays a pivotal role in this year's awards, with several projects demonstrating a commitment to environmentally responsible design. Sweetwater House by Christopher Botterill and Jackson Clements Burrows Architects, shortlisted in the Sustainable Architecture category, stands out for its innovative use of materials and eco-friendly construction methods. Other noteworthy mentions include Aboriginal Housing Victoria by Breathe, which also competes in the Residential and Melbourne Prize categories, and Life Cycle by Steffen Welsch Architects, representing sustainable design at its best.
"The emphasis on sustainability this year is encouraging," Wagner said. "Architects are increasingly embracing eco-friendly practices, which is crucial for the future of our built environment. It's heartening to see projects that not only look good but also do good."

The culmination of the 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards will be the Awards Night Dinner, held on Friday, June 7, at the iconic Astor Theatre in St Kilda. This highly anticipated event will honor the winners in each category, with those winners going on to compete in the National Architecture Awards in November.
In the lead-up to the awards ceremony, the Exhibition of Entries offers the public a unique opportunity to view the state's most recent architectural achievements. Hosted at Deakin University, Burwood, from April 18 onwards, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the shortlisted projects and gain insight into the future of Victorian architecture.
Wagner highlighted the importance of the exhibition, saying, "It's a rare opportunity for the public to see firsthand the incredible work our architects are doing. It's an event that both celebrates the profession and inspires the next generation of architects."
Looking Ahead
As we anticipate the awards ceremony and the announcement of this year's winners, it's clear that the 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards represent a celebration of creativity, innovation, and sustainability. These projects not only enhance the urban landscape but also contribute to a more vibrant and sustainable future for all Victorians.
