Work has begun on a $142 million upgrade of Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre in Sydney's Inner West, which will include the addition of more than 40 retail stores, as well as a comprehensive food and beverage offering.

“Our vision for this development is to create an inclusive space that adds convenience and lifestyle opportunities for those who live within our local community,” he said.

Features that include a disused warehouse next to The Metro, which will be 'upcycled' as part of the development, meaning it will retain its industrial facade.
Leading design practice Hames Sharley has been tasked with creating a space that "truly reflects the diversity of Sydney’s Inner West and those who call this area home".
The number of people calling the area home has steadily increased across the past decade, with the suburb's population growing at an average of 2.3 per cent per annum since 2011.
Long term resident Cassie Barlow said the upgrade reflected the growing needs of the area.
“I’ve got a young family and work in the Inner West, so I spend most my time here," she said.
"The upgrade to the Metro is definitely something I think the area needs and I can’t wait to have some more fresh food and dining options."
Builders ADCO Constructions began work for the project on January 21.
