The 16.1-hectare site – once home to the Canberra Brickworks Precinct in Yarralumla – expected to contain 380 dwellings
Doma Group has begun planning for the redevelopment of the old Brickworks which produced the Old Canberra Red bricks that went into the construction of some of the city’s oldest buildings, including Old Parliament House.
Doma Managing Director Jure Domazet said the masterplan preserved the site’s heritage while opening it back up to the people of Canberra.
He said most of the existing structures would be retained and repurposed into commercial and retail spaces or left as interesting relics to showcase the industrial history of the site.
“Canberra has very few interesting industrial spaces, but the kilns and associated buildings present an amazing opportunity to be repurposed and enjoyed by the public,” Domazet said.
“The scale of the site allows us to approach the Brickworks as a landscaping project that happens to include beautiful, boutique, low density dwellings.
“A significant proportion of the site will be earmarked for parks, green space and a lake that will be accessible by all, not just precinct residents.”

Doma Senior Development Manager David Carey said that Doma would retain a focus on sustainability, ensuring green initiatives were prioritised and harmonised with existing streetscapes as designs for the buildings were further developed.
“The development will achieve a five-star Greenstar Communities rating, including meaningful environmental initiatives that will delivery long-term benefits to its residents,” he said.
Doma said that a community engagement plan had been formulated with the Suburban Land Agency and that consultations with interested parties would continue throughout the redevelopment while it would continue to liaise with the Community Panel established by the ACT Government.
