The centrepiece of a new mixed-use urban destination in Dubai's Jumeirah residential strip has officially been launched, with construction on the Burj Jumeira tower now underway.

Developed through Dubai Holding, the 550-metre structure is being built in the Al Sufouh neighbourhood, opposite Sheikh Zayed Road.

Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was on hand for the building's inauguration on January 29, describing the tower and the surrounding area as a continuation of Dubai's vision for becoming a "city of the future distinguished by its intelligent design and cohesive infrastructure and network".

Sheikh Mohammed inspired the base of the tower, which was designed to resemble his fingerprint, and will play host to various social, cultural and artistic events and activities once the building is complete.

Further up will be a number of observation decks providing tourists with 360-degree panorimic views of Dubai.

The main viewing platform is accessible via lifts with modern digital screens that carry the visitor through a distinctive experience until they reach the desired platform.

At Burj Jumeira’s summit is the crown, a 450-meter high space capable of expanding to accommodate varying capacities and uses, which also comes with an accompanying sky-lounge and interconnected sky-restaurant to host larger scale events.

The tower will act as the main attraction for Downtown Jumeirah, which will encompass residential and commercial towers and hotels, as well unique F&B concepts, and world-class restaurants.

According to Dubai Holding Chairman Abdulla Al Habbai, the area will be underpinned by a comprehensive infrastructure that embraces the latest sustainability solutions and smart technologies.

“The entire Downtown Jumeira area, and Burj Jumeira specifically, are distinctive projects that focus on providing an unparalleled experience to both visitors and residents," he said.

"It will not only serve the needs of residents who are looking to live in cohesive and connected communities, but will also enhance Dubai’s tourism offering by adding another icon to the Emirate’s portfolio of unique attractions."
