After more than a decade of waiting, it's full steam ahead for The Barracks in Canberra, after Morris Property Group snapped up the iconic Section 100 site in June.
Ten years in the making, the Barracks will offer a world class precinct offering attractions for all ages.
Morris Property Group, a multi-generational family team is behind the project.
The project will transform the current 2.6-hectare site in a prime location between London Circuit and Vernon Circle into a community comprising of residential, retail, and commercial office spaces.
Morris Property Group Director, Barry Morris says The Barracks will be a "restful sanctuary".
“Our aim is to build a community that connects the three corners of the city – the lake, NewActon and the bustle of City West. Much thought has gone into our design to ensure the space is vibrant and lively day and night, while still offering a restful sanctuary for residents,” Mr Morris told WILLIAMS MEDIA.
“The key is a design that ensures The Barracks links the commercial, residential and recreational, as well as flowing seamlessly to the surrounding hubs.”
Architects Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt) have been brought on to design the site.
“The precinct has been designed so that it clearly connects to the rest of the city through vehicle and pedestrian access. We see this site as one of the key pieces to the CBD puzzle.
"However, we expect continued invigoration of other remaining sites to occur as our city grows after The Barracks are completed. We are very proud to have worked with fjmt in raising the bar and delivering a world-class standard residential development in the heart of the city,” Mr Morris said.
Stage one of the project will include 750-space carpark and residential car parking.
“Residents and those who park in the precinct will find walkways linking them to CBD offices outside of the precinct,” Mr Morris said.
“Stage 1 will be predominantly residential, with a small amount of retail space at ground level, and includes over 2000 square metres of private resident facilities including a pool, theatre, yoga lawn and gym. It’s also only a stone’s throw from the parks and trails of Lake Burley Griffin and City Hill.
“Future stages are also expected to house offices. Once completed, The Barracks will have around 6000 square metres of retail, including a supermarket and restaurants.
"While the design makes it easy for people to get into and out of the precinct, residents could find themselves never wanting to or having to leave. They could literally live, work, shop, eat, socialise and exercise all within the bounds of The Barracks," Mr Morris said.
“There will be much that sets The Barracks apart as an exceptional precinct,” Colliers International Director Residential, Shane Radnell said, “but it is the 40 years of unsurpassed experience of Morris Property Group, and the pride it takes in delivering quality homes, that we find continues to resonate with our buyers as many look for reputation and a track record on delivery for comfort of mind."
